Techies Gone Wild
How badly do you want a new iPhone? In downtown Manhattan, apparently people are waiting outside three days in advance of its release! Don’t these people have jobs? Others are paying people to stand in line for them!
So, how desperate are you for that iPhone? For $100 to $300, you can pay someone to stand in line for you outside a local Apple or AT&T retail store.
Jon May, an 18-year-old college student from Benicia looking for some extra cash, said he is planning to camp outside Walnut Creek’s Apple store Thursday and Friday. He and his friends are even making "iWait" T-shirts. May is charging $250.
There were no takers to his Craigslist ad as of Tuesday, but even if he doesn’t get work he said he plans to wait in line and offer his spot to the highest bidder come Friday, when Apple will start selling the phones at 6 p.m.
"If I’m waiting in line and people didn’t get a spot … I’m going to see how much people are willing to pay," May said.
Jared Brier, a 15-year-old high school student from Mill Valley, is another one of the many to post an ad on Craigslist offering to pick up an iPhone.
Brier was one of the first to get a Nintendo Wii video game console when it premiered last year, so he has a strategy for hitting the right store (not going to a popular location) and waiting in line (no overnighting for him).
