Suing Iran for Terrorism
The judge declared, "The cost of state-sponsored terrorism just went up," as he delivered his decision, suing the Islamic Republic of Iran $2.6 billion for its sponsorship of and logistical support for Hezbollah’s 1983 bombing of US peacekeepers’ barracks which killed 241 Americans.
I have every respect for these brave souls who lost their lives, and nothing but sympathy for their surviving family members… but… Let’s take a step back for a moment shall we?
First off, how does the judge recommend that the American Justice system force the Iranian state to pay this penalty? We already have sanctions galore imposed on this terrorist-sponsoring country and we’re doing our best to keep other countries from doing business with them, buying their oil, or assisting them in developing nuclear weapons. Does anyone really think the state will willingly hand over the $2.6 billion?
Second off, what does this case accomplish? One survivor said that the ruling gave them a sense of victory. What victory? This doesn’t change the facts on the ground, this doesn’t prevent Iran from continuing to support international terrorism, nor does it do anything to hamper future Hezbollah violence.
Finally, almost everyone agrees that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization and Iran is terrorist-sponsoring state. The hold-outs will not have their minds changed by this decision. Those who are convinced that Nasrallah and his murderous organization are freedom fighters protecting the sovereignty of Lebanon will remain unflinchingly supportive, even as they do their best to lay the country to waste.
Here’s to an enormous exercise in futility. Read the story from CNN here.
