Food Recalls: Bad Meat

by Ariel on November 3rd, 2007

Beef RecallOnce again we are reminded that there are more faulty products in this market of ours than toys with lead-based paint.

Look out for ground beef from Cargill Inc. which apparrently is contaminated with E. coli bacteria.  Apparently the shipment of bad meat may be from as early as October 8th. That means it likely made its way into consumers’ households.

Check your fridges and freezers and send this stuff back!  Remember, you can always go vegetarian… or kill your own cows.  Hmmm.

The giant agribusiness company Cargill Inc. said Saturday it is recalling more than 1 million pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The ground beef was produced October 8-11 at Cargill Meat Solutions’ plant in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania and distributed to retailers.

Affected retailers include Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans and Weis in Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Cargill learned the meat may be contaminated after the Agriculture Department found a problem with a sample of the beef produced on October 8, the company said. The bacterium is E. coli O157:H7.

"No illnesses have been associated with this product," John Keating, president of Cargill Regional Beef, said in a statement. "We are working closely with the USDA to remove this product from the marketplace."

E. coli is harbored in the intestines of cattle. Improper butchering and processing can cause the E. coli to get onto meat. Thorough cooking, to at least 160 degrees internal temperature, can destroy the bacteria.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and people with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to E. coli.

Cargill Meat Solutions, based in Wichita, Kansas, is the umbrella organization of Cargill’s beef, pork and turkey businesses.

The Wyalusing plant produces 200 million pounds of ground beef annually.

Cargill Inc., based in Wayzata, Minnesota, is one of the nation’s largest privately held companies. It makes food ingredients, moves commodities around the world and runs financial commodities trading businesses.

are you kidding me..go vegetarian…hmmm how many times in the last year have there been recalls on lettuce? how about those pot pies, hey how about the 5 million pizzas..I think we need to educated the consumer about ground beef…and how ecoli is introduced to the product..hey how about how the producers has so many safeguards in place…do you have any idea the lenghts the producer goes through to try to give you the safest product possible..EDUCATION is the key and the consumer just doesn’t get it…don’t critisize something you aren’t educated about….

You can only get E. Coli infection one way, and one way only–S***. It’s a S*** bacteria. Vegetation does not S***. The meat industry makes animals live in diarrhea 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And they dump 86,000 pounds of pure shit into the environment–KILLING millions of fresh water fish and infecting the soil with antibiotic resistant microbes-due to antibiotic abuse.
Yeah go vege. It’s actually healthier. Seriously. Why do you think there is an obestity problem–the meat industry also gives HORMONES to cows and pigs to make them bulk up, so needless to say 9 year old children are going into puberty these days. You think I’m exaggerating??

CLARIFICATION: Farm Factories dump, in the United States ALONE, 86,000 pounds of s*** into the environment EVERY SINGLE SECOND in soils and lakes–anyway they want. The government doesn’t care. The meat industry has unlimited power. They pay politicians millions every year.

Recalls on vegetation sometimes do occur, but it’s less than 1% of the total in meat recalls. And when vegetation is recalled–the meat industry is responsible for contaminating it because vegetation does not s***. E. Coli and salmonella strictly comes from S***.
