This Thanksgiving Don’t Eat Hair
To say that this story is gross just doesn’t do it justice.
The New England Journal of Medicine has reported that an 18-year-old woman recently had a 10 pound hairball removed from her stomach relieving months of pain, vomiting, and weight loss. The mass was approximately 15 inches by 7 inches by 7 inches practically filling up her entire stomach.
What’s worse is that this furball was composed entirely of the woman’s own hair! The woman suffered from a disorder known as trichophagia… that is compulsively eating one’s own hair. Now I understand that this is a mental condition and not her own fault, but I do wonder why we don’t hear about this sort of thing more often.
