Bulgarian Officer Caught Stealing Tank
I have no idea what use someone would have for a decommissioned WWII-era tank but one thing is for sure, security is pretty damn lax wherever these guys were stealing their tanks from.
Bulgarian police have just arrested a military officer and two German civilians who had already stolen one MK IV Panzer tank and were attempting to steal another. What’s more, somehow they managed to take the first one and smuggle it out of the country!
Now this is not some stick in the back of your truck trailer kind of ancient tank. It’s really freakin’ big! It weighs up to 24,000 kg and could fit four people inside. Either they paid the border guards really well to drive this thing out of the country or border security is next to nothing.
In any event, they’ve been arrested. If you do happen to see an MK IV Panzer tank driving down the street that seems out of place however, why don’t you give the Bulgarian military a call. They might want it back. ;-)
Police have arrested two German citizens and a Bulgarian military officer accused of stealing a World War II-era German tank and attempting to steal another, authorities said Wednesday.
Military prosecutor Hristo Tinev said the three suspects allegedly attempting to steal a MK IV Panzer tank in southern Bulgaria on December 13.
They are accused of stealing another tank and smuggling it out of the country last month.
The two Germans, identified only as T.J. and M.M., and the Bulgarian officer, Alexey Petrov, face up to 15 years in prison if convicted, Tinev said.
He did not give other details of how the arrests were made. According to experts quoted by the daily paper 24 Hours, the tanks were unfit for combat, but valued on the antiquities market at up to €50,000 (US$72,000).
