Putin Holds on to Power

What does a popular dictator do when promising to respect term limits in a nominally democratic country?  Hand over power to a protégé and continue to pull the strings from behind the scenes.

That’s the script Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to be following when he named Dmitry Medvedev, the current Deputy Prime Minister, as his successor.  But it looks like that’s not quite enough for this former KGB agent.

Apparently he’s heading to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, tomorrow to discuss reincorporating the country into the Russian Federation.  This could allow him to remain formal head of state of the merged country!  Sneaky, sneaky.
