Simply Dumb

The CBC and Reality TV

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has recently finished producing a series called "The Week the Women Went".  Filmed in small oil-patch town of Hardisty, Alberta, population 760, the show explores how the men of the town cope with their jobs, homemaking, and children while all the women in town enjoy an all-expenses paid week-long vacation at a resort.

The program has been billed as a "social experiment" in gender issues.  To be perfectly honest, it just sounds to me like one more lame attempt at broadening the scope of reality television.  Still, it might be interesting to watch oil field workers who work incredibly long shifts with little time at home trying to cook dinner, play with the kids, get them to sleep at night, drive them to school, and arrange for babysitters and play dates.

Will the local economy collapse?  Will the families survive?  You’ll have to watch to find out! … oh wait, it really is just another lame reality show. :-p
