Simply Dumb

This story is about as close as real life can get to the plot of a daytime soap opera. 

The BBC has reported that the British courts have just annulled the marriage of two siblings.  But this is no simple case of incest.  As it turns out, the couple are biological twins and, what’s more, the two were adopted by separate families and had no knowledge that they had a brother or sister.

One MP had this to say: "And if you don’t know you are biologically related to someone, you may become attracted to them and tragedies like this may occur."  The lawyers working in the couple’s defense say that the two felt an "inevitable attraction."

I don’t want to say that this is funny; in fact it is quite tragic.  One can only hope that this sort of thing does not happen all that often.  With increasingly availability of information and better adoption procedures, one would think that the likelihood that an adopted child would be unaware of the existence of biological siblings would be quite low.  Fortunately the couple’s identity has remained anonymous and appears to have been handled with the utmost care.
