Gulag Beauty Pageant
I came across a very odd story while trolling the BBC. Did you know that Russia still operates a number of high security prisons in Siberia? What’s more, many of the prisons are for women only.
Now I’m sure you didn’t know this; at least one of the prisons holds an annual beauty pageant in which the inmates compete for early release! Says the prison’s administrative head, “We wanted to find ways to occupy convicts’ free time“.
Sounds more than a little odd to me.
