Sex Offenders Can’t Teach in Cali - Anymore
According to the Associated Press, The California Senate has closed a loophole allowing teachers who have had their license revoked for sexual misconduct to still teach.
On Monday the Senate unanimously passed a bill requiring the state to suspend teachers’ credentials if another state has revoked their license for sexual misconduct.
A 2007 AP investigation found 2,570 educators nationwide who have had their credentials revoked, denied, surrendered or sanctioned following allegations of sexual misconduct. That investigation covered the years 2001-05. The California bill targets a loophole in the state’s credentialing system that applies to those who have taught in other states. The loophole allowed them to keep teaching while California officials investigated.
That process could take years, which of course could lead to a lot more problems. The Mary Kay LeTourneaus of the world could seduce a 13-year-old and have a couple of his kids before a state-run investigation could catch them.
