La. State Senate Nixes Baggy Pants Ban
Ah, my old home Louisiana. The Associated Press out of Baton Rouge reports that a state senate panel rejected a bill that would have criminalized sagging pants.
The bill proposed by Sen. Derrick Shepherd would have made illegal any clothing that “intentionally exposes undergarments or intentionally exposes any portion of the pubic hair, cleft of the buttocks or genitals.” Ewww. It’s kind of a shame we might need legislation to tell people that. If the bill had passed, penalties would have included a $175 fine and eight days of community service.
Sen. Yvonne Dorsey said she was afraid it was a free speech issue. Free speech? If your butt crack feels the need to speak in public, I don’t want to know what it’s saying. She’s no doubt nervous because Shepherd tried a similar measure in 2004 but the American Civil Liberties Union helped defeat it. I get the feeling I’ll be ranting on this more later.
