A Pipe Bomb is Not a Show and Tell Item!
There are no good excuses for trying to sneak a bomb onto a plane, but saying you wanted to show your friends Iraqi bomb making techniques has to be one of the worst.
According to court documents released today, Jamaican Kevin Brown is accused of trying to board an Air Jamaica flight Tuesday with pipe-bomb making materials.
Authorities at Orlando International Airport confiscated two glass vodka bottles containing nitromethane, a colorless liquid used as a fuel for drag racing, in manufacturing and as a cleaning solvent from Brown’s luggage. His strange behavior (that is to say, other strange behavior besides trying to sneak explosives onto a plane) tipped off Transportation Security Administration behavior experts. Brown’s baggage also had a model rocker ignitor, galvanized pipes, end caps, two small containers containing BBs, batteries, a laptop and instructions on how to make bombs, according to FBI court papers.
Brown initially said he wanted to detonate the bomb on a tree stump in Jamaica and then added the ridiculous story about wanting to show his friends how he saw Iraqis build pipe bombs. The FBI is still investigating whether the 32-year-old was ever in Iraq.
Brown is charged with one count of attempting to carry an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft. The FBI believed his most recent address was in Gainesville. And Brown will undergo a review of his mental health. Good call.
