Man Protests Drunken Mayor

La Mesa Sign Not too long ago, the La Mesa (near San Diego) mayor, Art Madrid, was found drunk in public. The police found him lying on the sidewalk, vomit nearby. They wound up taking him home. The police are being criticized because they didn’t perform a sobriety check on the mayor or the city employee found with him. Did we mention that said employee was slumped in a passenger seat of Madrid’s SUV, the engine of the vehicle still running?

Well, one La Mesa resident decided to perform his own one-man protest. He stood outside the La Mesa PD for a few hours on Friday, holding a sign with beer cans draped over it. What did the sign say? “La Mesa PD, Drunk! Need a Ride.”

The La Mesa man, Vince Voight, was irritated when Madrid was quoted in the San Diego paper as saying the matter was closed for him. An independent investigator has cleared both Madrid and the officers of any wrongdoing, so Madrid apparently feels that the matter is over. Voight disagrees. Hence, his protest. He said he teaches his kids responsibility for their actions, so why shouldn’t the mayor do the same?

So let’s see. Mayor gets drunk. Is found lying on the sidewalk next to a pool of vomit. He’s given a ride home courtesy of taxpayers. Now, what would happen to anyone the cops didn’t know? They’d probably get hauled in until they sober up, and get cited for being drunk in public. Did Madrid? Nope. I don’t know about you, but I’m beginning to see a pattern in politics in San Diego. One that makes me a little bit embarrassed.
