Italy’s tax agency reveals private financial information

by Becky on May 1st, 2008

italian moneyThere are some angry Italians out there after the finance ministry posted taxpayer earnings from 2005 on its site. Tax authorities claimed that they were trying to increase “transparency” but no one seems to know what kind of transparency they’re talking about. The site almost crashed when people flooded the site to check on their neighbors and famous people.
The site was shut down after they received numerous complaints. And who wouldn’t complain when every Italian citizen had their earning and tax contributions posted for the world to see?

The Deputy Economic Minister was confused as to all of the fuss. And he used American soaps or TV shows as part of his justification. Say what? We’re still trying to figure out what they meant by improving transparency, since they mention it so many times.

The deputy minister was part of a group trying to eliminate tax evasion. But we tend to think that publishing tax information is going to encourage more people to evade, if it means protecting their private data. If the government posted all of your tax information, would you want to pay?
