There’s a New Warden in Louisiana State Pen
If you’re afraid of black bears, we wouldn’t recommend running around the middle of the Louisiana State Penitentiary. Because you just might run into a female that weighs around 400 pounds or so.
Warden Burl Cain thinks the black bear is a good deterrent for his inmates. And really, who’d want to run into a bear, friendly or not? The prison is about 28 square miles, with all but about 5 1/2 square miles running as a farm. That final five is mostly woods. Perfect bear breeding ground.
Workers measured the bear footprints at six inches in diameter. They estimate the bear at 450 pounds. Prison officials think there may be as many as 8 to 10 bears on the prison grounds. The wildlife folks, however, don’t think there are that many bears. They also doubt that a bear would attack an escaping prisoner, stating that bears are actually shy.
Bears. Shy. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’d stick around to find out. The wildlife representative also stated that there haven’t been any predatory bear attacks to their knowledge. Um, but … would you want to be the first to find out differently?
Yeah, we didn’t think so. Did we mention the prison grounds also house alligators, rattlesnakes, and wild pigs? No wonder the last recorded escape attempt was three years ago. It’s probably safer behind bars.
