Iceland’s most unusual museum

by Becky Scott on May 15th, 2008

Icelandic-Phallological-Museum NcThe next time you’re in Iceland, you could always think about seeking out an unusual stop: the Icelandic Phallological Museum. It hosts a collection of 261 male, um, organs from 90 species. But no humans. Yet.
Four men have promised to donate their penises to the museum upon their deaths. They would join a sperm whale (154 pounds and 5.58 feet long), the largest, and a hamster (2mm), the smallest, among others.

The museum opened in 1997 and its number of visitors has been growing each year. And about 60% are women.

The founder and owner, Mr. Hjartarson, has been collecting animal sex organs for 24 years. So when someone asks about your hobby, what do you say? “Hi, I’m Sigurdur and in my spare time I like to collect penises.” I guess that would make for interesting party chatter. Or something.

Good luck with that museum, Sigurdur. For your sake, we hope it continues to, um, grow. Yeah.
