If you hear scratching, don’t open the box
Imagine you’re a postal worker in Pennsylvania. You’re going about your business, moving packages to and fro. You see a box from Taiwan, labeled toys, gifts and jellies. But toys don’t make scratching noises now, do they?
The postmaster suspected that the package in question held live organisms. So the package was x-rayed and opened by Customs. They found 26 (yikes!) Hercules, rhinoceros and Goliath beetles inside. Doing the heebie-jeebie dance right now, don’t mind us.
By the way, it’s illegal to ship live beetles into the U.S. without a permit. The beetles were huge, some of the largest that the agriculture specialist had seen. And they’re highly destructive pests. Customs thinks they were intended for breeding purposes.
Just researching this story makes us cringe, and then we have to go and look for pictures on top of that. Don’t blame us if you have nightmares tonight, too.
