MySpace mom indicted for teen’s suicide

by Becky on May 19th, 2008

Myspace-Mom-Charged NcRemember the girl who was tormented on MySpace and committed suicide? The mom who helped perpetrate the hoax that sent the girl over the edge was indicted last week.

Lori Drew is accused of creating a MySpace profile in the name of a nonexistent teenage boy, who she then used to talk to Megan Meier. She was supposedly trying to find out what Meier had been saying about her daughter (a former friend of Meier’s).

But this goes way beyond just trying to find out what Meier had said. Drew perpetuated the myth of this teenage boy, leading Meier to believe he liked her. And then, suddenly, the boy turned against Meier and started saying nasty things to her. Eventually, Meier received a message that the world would be better off without her.

She killed herself the same day.

We cannot believe that a grown woman would do something like this to a teenage girl. A teenager! Teens have fights, break up with friends, find new ones, talk smack about each other, then sometimes make up and are BFF again. It’s the nature of teens. But an adult, knowing how teenage girls can take things, sending horribly unkind messages to a girl simply because she wasn’t friends with her daughter?

Shame on you, Lori Drew.

Drew is being charged with conspiracy and fraudulently gaining access to someone else’s computer (MySpace’s). She was charged in a federal court. Missouri’s laws don’t seem to apply to anything in this case. I wonder if that’ll change after this?

    Remember the girl who was tormented on MySpace and committed suicide?

    Do I ever, and the only news I can imagine being better than this indictment is learning that the courts have thrown Lori Drew in the slammer and then thrown away the key. What a pathetic excuse for a human being, let alone a mother.

    Its not so much that Missouri law doesn’t cover it. Because the crime was perpetrated on Myspace’s servers, the trial has to be held where the servers reside, which is in CA.

    It’s my understanding that Missouri looked into what they could charge her with, too. But nothing in their laws really applied. I hope that changes, since they were both in MO, there should be some sort of harassment or stalking law that applies.

    @chandra - I just can’t understand any mom doing that. It’s pathetic.
