Associated Press Alienates the Blogosphere

B1Keyboard02The Associated Press wants to limit the amount of text that bloggers and web sites can excerpt from their articles. Only there’s one little tiny thing called fair-use under US copyright law.

Which the AP apparently wants to ignore.

We understand that some sites go so far as to reprint entire articles, and we completely agree that it infringes on their copyright and bloggers should not do it. But when they first issued a ‘cease and desist’ to the Drudge Retort, they were freaking out over quotes as small as 39 words.

The AP has since decided that their actions were a little “heavy-handed” and that they’ll rethink their policies. We certainly hope so. Because for some political and news bloggers, limiting their ability to quote and comment on news articles impacts their ability to react to the news and write about it.
