No money? Auction your wedding

As internet culture continues to get more bizarre every day, we never know what we’re going to find. A viral music video could soar into popularity. A web soap opera could make someone famous.

Or a bride could start an eBay auction to find a bridesmaid. Kelly Gray from Virginia set up an eBay auction to fill her last open bridesmaid spot in her 2009 wedding. Worried about finances, she hoped to get a little extra money to throw at her nuptials.

You just have to ask yourself, why would anyone pay to be in a wedding? As it is, bridesmaids usually have to buy their own dress and shoes, and pay any travel expenses. But to pay for the “privilege” of being in the wedding party? We just don’t get it.

The auction ended at a high bid of $5,700, by the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group. And they upped their bid, saying they’ll donate $10K to the wedding and all of the drinks. Is it a publicity stunt for them? Absolutely. They’ll be running some sort of contest to find a bridesmaid.

I swear, our culture keeps getting weirder and weirder. Of course, I’m the type of person who likes to keep control of her own affairs and doesn’t want to sell things like her wedding to the highest bidder. Hey, I can understand being on a tight wedding budget. And there’s nothing wrong with creative financing. But how about creating a reasonable budget and then saving up for it rather than going into debt or auctioning off a wedding spot?

Well, to each her own, I guess. But man, I wonder what kind of crazy society my son will see when he grows up. I’m fearful.
