YouTube Fight King and CBS Con Viewers

There’s a lot of talk about CBS’ first televised MMA event last Saturday night, almost none of it good. Kimbo Slice, a former homeless man who became a sensation with fights shown on the Internet, headlined the Elite XC’s debut on network TV.

I don’t blame Slice for taking the money. You can better believe I would. But not only did he have an opponent who has lost seven of his last nine fights, said opponent may have made Slice tap out.

Also, James Thompson fought with a cauliflower ear the size of a celestial object. That thing looked like the conjoined twin fetus the nurse from South Park had on her head. You combine that monstrosity with the WWE-style refereeing (No, our golden boy didn’t tap out- look over there, a cheerleader!) and it wasn’t a great bow for the sport.

Many critics called for CBS to use established promotion UFC but MMA experts say that organization wouldn’t have let itself be used like this. That group has even gotten Sen. John McCain to rescind his “human cockfighting” description of the sport.

CBS pulled good numbers though and that’s the bottom line in TV. Of course, spare me the argument that the sport is “too brutal” for networks. That ship sailed when Fox hit us with “When Animals Attack.”

That dude Kimbo Slice is scary looking. He probably should just be a fake wrestler than a real MMA fighter. Every idiot watching him on You Tube made him famous. Pat yourself on the back if you were one of them. At least a former homeless dude has made good, even if he does scare the pants off me. I am so glad I don’t have cable.

Yeah, I’d bet any amount he shows up at a WWE pay-per-view within a year. Vince McMahon is pretty media savvy and he knows when to jump on a bandwagon.
