Glad Congress Got Around To This

US Congress buil Legislation currently in the House of Representatives would apologize to African-Americans for slavery and Jim Crow laws. Better late than never, I guess. Individual states have apologized but this would be the first national apology.

As an African-American, I’m unsure whose butt we’re supposed to kick at this point. Nobody’s alive that was in power when slavery existed – not even John McCain is that old. And Strom Thurmond died a while back, possibly when somebody told him slavery was outlawed.

In an interesting side note, African-American representative candidate Nikki Tinker is saying the timing of the measure is politically motivated. She thinks it’s a ploy to help get incumbent Steve Cohen, author of the legislation re-elected. While the actual impact of the apology is only symbolic, I would not want to be the Black politician campaigning against it.
