Exclusive Photo of Chinese Gold Medalist
If China thought the Olympic Games would bring a lot of positive pub, well, they may want to try hosting a really big Scrabble tournament or something next time.
The New York Times reports that many expert observers are asking questions about the age of the gymnasts on China’s gold medal team. All the girls on the team are listed as turning 16 this year on their passports, despite Times reporters finding conflicting ages listed for team members in Chinese publications. The government response? Those other sports reporters got the ages wrong.
US National Team Coordinator Martha Karolyi said Chinese gymnast Deng Linlin appeared to be missing one of her baby teeth. The women on the US team, according to the Times investigation, average being 30 pounds heavier and 3 1/2 inches taller than their Chinese counterparts. In China’s defense, maybe all that fog hovering over the city has stunted the little girls’ growth.
