Olympic opening song was lip synced
As if little girls aren’t already put under enough pressure to be cute enough or skinny enough or perfect enough, China has added to the fray. A 7-year-old Chinese girl with an amazing voice was deemed not good-looking enough to appear in the ceremony. So they used her voice, but replaced her with a 9-year-old.
This is one of a series of things China has done to try and make the Olympics as flawless as possible. Like shutting down protests. Shooing away migrant workers. Saying the smog is really just fog. And faking fireworks on the TV coverage.
But this has got to be the most annoying so far. Telling a 7-year-old girl that she’s not cute enough to be seen, but her voice if fabulous enough to be heard. Gee, darlin’ you’ve got a face that was made for radio. And really? Pics of little Yang Peiyi show her to be just a typical little girl. She’s certainly cute enough for the rest of us.
But not for China.
Instead, Lin Miaoke was chosen for her ability to look good on screen. What does this say to both little girls? You’ll get further in life if you’re pretty. Talent alone won’t get you anywhere. I suppose if people were to look at Hollywood as an example, they’d be right. But it doesn’t work that way for the rest of us who live and work in the real world.
I am so disgusted by this. They wanted to make a good impression on people, but instead they’ve soured it for a lot of people. And they’ve made one little girl seem inadequate when she’s clearly not.
Some say they should keep the opening ceremonies aesthetically pleasing. Others say it is damaging to both girls. What do you think?

Ridiculous. China, your superficial slip is really showing during these Olympics.
Becky – That’s terrible! I’m with you – they should have let the little girl with the beautiful voice sing and *be seen. Argh…
Doesn’t sound very communist to me. Sounds very American.

Douglas, you have a point. A very sad point. I would hope better for the Olympics, though.
Looks like the only part left to fake now is the actual competition. Oh wait, the Chinese gymnastics team has taken care of that for us.
EVERY CHILD IS BEAUTIFUL, NO CHILD SHOULD BE FROWNED APON- ESPECIALLY ONE WITH AN INCREDIBLE VOICE LIKE HERS
THEY HAVE RUINED THAT WONDERFUL GIRL’S SELF ESTEEM AND NO ONE SHOULD EVER DO THAT TO CHILDREN
