Detroit Mayor Is Going to Jail
The Detroit Free Press reports that Detroit Mayor (soon to have former added to his title) Kwame Kilpatrick has agreed to plead guilty to obstruction charges and step down after more than six years in office. Much of the past year was an absolute mess due to a seven-months-long sex scandal that led to felony charges. Jail time is reported to be part of the plea deal.
Apparently the married mayor and his top aide Christine Beatty spent a little too much time working late, so to speak, and in March got charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice. Kilpatrick admitted to lying under oath about the affair and their roles in firing a deputy police chief.
Get this, the pair texted each other love notes on city-issued pagers, messages that the Free Press published. Beatty did not plead guilty and next will appear in court on Sept. 11.
