Rare Insight Into Nepal's Royal Kumari

Anytime you feel like you have too much on your plate, be thankful you’re not Matani Shakya. Reuters reports the 3-year-old girl from Nepal was named a Kumari, or “living goddess,” on Tuesday.

She will be worshipped as a living incarnation of the Hindu deity Taleju until she reaches puberty. Sheesh, no pressure there. Say, we came to pray to Taleju. Taleju is going potty right now, she’ll be with you in a second.

On the other hand,we have 2-year-old and 9-month-old sons and it’s safe to say they’re giving all the orders around here. And the God I pray to only asks for 10 percent, I’m pretty sure the kids are costing more of my salary than that.

But it’s not all sunshine, lollipops and flowers for Matani. Reports say former Kumaris struggle to adjust to life after their time as deities. Gee, ya think? After you’ve been a living god, it’s got to be downhill from there. To make matters even worse, legend has it that men who marry former Kumaris live shortened lifespans.

It must really suck to go from having men fall at your feet to not being able to get one to come within 75 yards of you. Editorial note: This is a photo of a different Kumari, 9-year-old Shajani Shakya. As one might imagine, it’s hard to get a picture of a living goddess.
