gulag-beauty-pageant I came across a very odd story while trolling the BBC.  Did you know that Russia still operates a number of high security prisons in Siberia?  What’s more, many of the prisons are for women only.

Now I’m sure you didn’t know this; at least one of the prisons holds an annual beauty pageant in which the inmates compete for early release!  Says the prison’s administrative head, “We wanted to find ways to occupy convicts’ free time“.

Sounds more than a little odd to me.

ny-governor-in-sex-ring-scandal New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is in hot water after it was discovered that he has been a client for a large international prostitution ring.  There are few scandals a politician can have while in office that are more damaging than being implicated in a sex scandal, and this one in particular is a biggie.

While I’m a big advocate of saying what happens in the bedroom should stay in the bedroom, but I doubt the New York voting public will be so forgiving.  Ironically, as the state’s former attorney general, Spitzer oversaw the prosecution of at least two prostitution rings by the state’s organized crime task force.

Read all about the scandal here… and in just about every news outlet in the country.

vista-sucks It may be hard to believe, but even some of Microsoft’s top executives are upset with the abysmal performance of their new Windows Vista operating system.

Don’t believe me?  Check out this timely article from the New York Times.

Where oh where did Microsoft go wrong?  My guess is when they left DOS in the dust.

garfield-minus-garfield

Here’s an ingenious site I stumbled across yesterday.  I thought you might all enjoy Garfield minus Garfield.

Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb.

I always imagined that when one receives an invitation to the White House for a meal, a vast and lavish feast would await them.

Not so, Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain noted yesterday.  When he made a recent trip to the White House to receive an official endorsement from President George W. Bush, they dined on hot dogs.

“[The President] said he was having a hot dog, so I had a hot dog,” McCain, referring to Bush, told reporters on his campaign plane during a flight to Florida.  He said it tasted just like any ordinary hot dog.

How disappointing.

borg-baby That’s right folks, actress Jeri Ryan best known for her role as 7 of 9 on Star Trek’s canceled spin-off series Voyager, has given birth to little baby Giselle.

I hope the wiring, jagged metal, and other odds and ends didn’t hurt too much to push out.  That’s going to be one scary looking kid!

henry-the-hexapus Scientists at an aquarium in the UK have made an odd discovery.  One of their recently acquired octopuses is missing two of its eight legs.

Dubbed Henry the Hexapus, it seems that this guy suffers from a birth defect where two of the sets of legs failed to separate during gestation.

This brings a whole new meaning to the term webbed feet…

Check out the story here at CNN.

The Future of Corporate Ethics A recent poll has revealed that teenagers in this country are just as prepared to lie, cheat, steal, and engage in dishonest business practices as their elders.

According to the Junior Achievement/Deloitte Teen Ethics Survey, 71% of teens surveyed were prepared to make ethical decisions in the workplace.  A good sign, right?

Well, 38% indicated that they believed cheating, plagiarizing, lying, and even committing acts of violence might be acceptable in order to achieve success.  In addition, 21% of teens surveyed believed that violence could be justified in settling workplace arguments and 20% felt violence in the form of revenge was morally acceptable.

Now why might kids think this?  The constant example of their elders aside, 51% said that they felt an “overwhelming pressure” to succeed.  While I am sure this is one reason for such morally base beliefs, I imagine many others are simply sociopaths.  I’ve seen this far too often in the workplace where employees step on each other for promotions, employees work to undermine the authority of superiors, and superiors take advantage of the individually weak position of their underlings

I would like to say that there is some karmic retribution in this world for people like this, but it seems far too often that these people are rewarded for their behavior while responsible employees who care about the future of their company and not merely themselves get the shaft.  No good deed goes unpunished it seems, and the youth of America seem to agree.
