Laser show blinds ravers

When partygoers hit a rave, they expect music. And fun. And lots of dancing. And maybe even a laser show or two if it’s fancy. But what they don’t bargain for is laser-blindness.
That’s exactly what ravers got last week at a Moscow party. Bummer.
Almost 30 reported cases stemmed from a July 5th part northeast of Moscow. Heavy rains forced the party organizers to set up big tents to hold the festival attendees. So instead of the lasers pointing up to the sky, like they normally would, they …read more

Exposed bride sues designer

Exposed bride sues designer

Picture your wedding day. Music, flowers, friends, family, and the one you love standing beside you. Ah, true love. The funny thing about weddings is the tradition of the bride and groom standing with their backs to the audience. No one gets to see their faces, or their expressions, as they say their vows.
One Italian woman is wishing she’d bucked that tradition and faced the congregation, after the back of her dress fell out. Her almost $4,000 wedding dress fell apart while she was at the altar, exposing her posterior to everyone.
She was mortified and claims it ruined her wedding. …read more

iPhone Fans Have Disappointing Day

Today’s long-awaited launch of Apple’s new iPhone has become a cautionary tale about buying the first run of anything electronic. After waiting hours in line for the chance to even buy the new tech toy, Apple aficionados will have to wait even longer to actually use them.
Apparently a problem with Apples iTunes servers prevented the phones from being activated in store like most customers planned. Thus, employees had to tell iPhone buyers to activate the phones from their home computers. That didn’t work either, making the phones useless for …read more

Woman sues Victoria’s Secret over a thong

Now I’ve seen everything. A 52-year-old woman from Los Angeles is suing Victoria’s Secret over a pair of thong underwear. I’ll just let that sink in for a second.
She claims that a metal clip flew off of the panties and hit her in the eye, causing immense pain. The metal was apparently securing a rhinestone heart.
First, do you know any 52-year-olds that shop at VS? Seriously? Or still wear thongs?
Um, honey, I hate to tell you this, but things usually only fly off of stuff like that if you’re, well, …read more

Toxic Metals Found in Animal Toys

Toxic Metals Found in Animal Toys

It was only a matter of time before this was found.  Now in addition to worrying about your kids and their toys, you’ve got to worry about Fido too.  My suggestion: stick to giving gifts this holiday that are domestically produced until something is demonstrated to have changed substantially in the manufacturing processes in Chinese factories.

Harry, a 3-year-old Jack Russell terrier, loves to explore … so much so that he has forgotten all about his chew toys, at least for now.
ConsumerAffairs.com reported that a Texas lab found elevated levels of lead, chromium and cadmium in two Chinese-made pet toys …read more

Date Rape Drug in Toys

Date Rape Drug in Toys

This is the oddest and perhaps most troubling chapter in the ongoing toy recall scandals.  Now I’m no chemist, but how do you accidentally coat children’s beads with chemicals which transform into GHB upon ingestion by accident?
The affected product is the popular children’s art project toy Bindeez or Aqua Dots which consist of brightly colored beads that can be arranged into various shapes and patterns and then sprayed with water to set.  According to the BBC, the toys were supposed to be covered in a non-toxic glue but somehow they got the formula wrong.
This all sounds pretty damn suspicious to …read more

Food Recalls: Bad Meat

Food Recalls: Bad Meat

Once again we are reminded that there are more faulty products in this market of ours than toys with lead-based paint.
Look out for ground beef from Cargill Inc. which apparrently is contaminated with E. coli bacteria.  Apparently the shipment of bad meat may be from as early as October 8th. That means it likely made its way into consumers’ households.
Check your fridges and freezers and send this stuff back!  Remember, you can always go vegetarian… or kill your own cows.  Hmmm.

Halloween Recall: Spit Out Those Teeth!

Halloween Recall: Spit Out Those Teeth!

Yet another toy recall from Chinese products using lead paint.  I’m afraid this one is just too little, too late.
According to reports, this "in the mouth" costume contains 100 times the allowable amount of lead!  That’s bound to do some damage.
The story also says that these things have been on the market since January 2006, so I guess we have two issues: 1) if they are really harmful how many people have been poisoned? and 2) WHAT TOOK SO FREAKIN’ LONG TO ANNOUNCE THIS?
If you plan on wearing "ugly teeth" described below tonight, don’t.  If you already are, spit ‘em …read more

Yet Another Toy Recall

Yet Another Toy Recall

I’m not sure this even counts as news any more, but given the potentially hazardous nature of these products, these stories bear repeating.
Mattel has announced yet another toy recall this month, this time for Go Diego Go Animal Rescue Boat toys imported by Fisher Price.  I believe Diego is part of the popular Dora the Explorer series.  Parents, if you have this toy sitting around your house, send it back, get a refund, and bring your kid to a doctor just in case!
Here’s hoping that the recalls stop sometime in the near future… but maybe they’re coming around for another …read more
