Here’s how a seemingly harmless prank gets out of hand. A New York man decided to take a riding lawnmower out for an early morning spin. At 1 a.m., in fact. If you haven’t guessed, he was drunk.

Police got reports of a drunk person at a home in Irving. When they arrived, they spotted a tuxedo-clad man on the mower. He wasn’t stealing it, as it was apparently his own mower.

But police charged the guy with felony driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation. Of a lawnmower. It’s supposedly a felony because he had a previous DWI conviction. But come on. A felony? For drunk driving a riding lawnmower? Does that seem a bit excessive to anyone else?

It does remind us of the story about George Jones driving to the liquor store on his riding lawnmower, though.
