ABC News brings us a tale of amazingly bad sportsmanship. Cuba’s Angel Matos and his coach Leudis Gonzalez are banned from the Olympic games for life after Matos kicked a referee in the face. Yes, you read me right: an Olympic martial arts expert kicked a defenseless ref in the head.
Matos was reportedly upset about being disqualified in his bronze medal match. Matos was defeating Kazakhstan’s Arman Chilmanov 3-2, with 1:02 in the second round, when Matos fell to the mat. The Associated Press reports that Dzhakhon Kurbanov, the light heavyweight from Tajikistan who bit his opponent on the shoulder in a quarterfinal bout, will not face sanctions or suspension by the International Boxing Association.
His only punishment for taking a page out of the Mike Tyson Boxing Manual will be disqualification from the Olympic boxing tournament. With 17 seconds left in the third round of his bout with Kazakhstan’s Yerkebulan Shynaliyev. Kurbanov was trailing 12-6. If China thought the Olympic Games would bring a lot of positive pub, well, they may want to try hosting a really big Scrabble tournament or something next time.
The New York Times reports that many expert observers are asking questions about the age of the gymnasts on China’s gold medal team. All the girls on the team are listed as turning 16 this year on their passports, despite Times reporters finding conflicting ages listed for team members in Chinese publications. The government response? Those other sports reporters got the ages wrong.

The organizers of the Olympics have given out free condoms to athletes at every event since 1992 to raise AIDS awareness. They ran out in Sydney and doubled the number in Athens, according to Reuters. This time, they’re hoping 100,000 condoms will be enough to satiate the 10,500 athletes.
